TELLING THE CLOCK

DEFINITION

When telling the clock, hours uses the numbering system of ‘한, 두, 세, 네…’ butminutes use ‘일, 이, 삼, 사…’. When it ask a clock, ‘몇 is used, which means ‘how many?’. It is used whenever asking something related to numbers.

A : 지금 몇시예요?

B : 1시예요.

TELLING THE CLOCK

* ‘삼십분’,which means 30minutes, can be replaced with ‘반’meaning ‘half’.

6 :30  →   여섯 시 삼십분 = 여섯시 반

DAYS OF WEEKS

DEFINITION

‘요일’indicates days of a week in Korea. They are names after planets of solar system. When it ask a day, ‘무슨’is used instead of ‘몇’since the counting units of days are not numbers.

A : 오늘이 슨 요일이에요?                      A : 내일이 몇 요일이에요?

B : 수요일이에요.                                             B : 목요일이에요.

DEFINITION

The Particle ‘에’ follows nouns which indicate time and express the time when some actions, events or situations occur. It corresponds to ‘at, on, in’ in English. However, some nouns indicating time such as ‘지금’,‘오늘’do not need time particle, ‘에’.

DEFINITION

When two sentences show contrast in content, they can be connected by adding, Conjunctive Ending, ‘–지만’ to the stem of the verb or adjective of the preceding sentence.It corresponds with ‘but’ or ‘however’ in English.

CONJUGATION

Present Tense

Remove suffix ‘’ and combine stem word with ‘지만’ :  

가다 → 가지만

싸다 → 싸지만

먹다 → 먹지만

읽다 → 읽지만

마시다 →  마시지만

따뜻하다 → 따뜻하지만

재미있다 → 재미있지만

Past Tense

If the adjective and verb ends with ㅗ,ㅏ + 았지만 : 

싸다 → 쌌지만

좋다 → 좋았지만

모르다 → 몰랐지만

[‘르’irregular]If the adjective and verb ends with + 었지만 :

쓰다 → 썼지만

배우다 → 배웠지만

마시다 → 마셨지만

시끄럽다 → 시끄러웠지만 [‘ㅂ’irregular]

If the adjective and verb ends with ‘’ → 했지만

공부하다 → 공부했지만

수영하다 → 수영했지만

복잡하다 → 복잡했지만

불고기는 있지만  ** (불고기는) 비싸요.  Bulgogi is tasty but expensive.

나는 학교에 가지만 친구는 안가요. I go to school butmy friend does not.

한국어 책은 읽지만 영어 책은 못 읽어요.I can read Korean books but cannot read English ones.

비빔밥은 먹지만 김치는 매워서 안 먹어요.I eat Bibimbab but don’t eat Kimchi because it’s spicy.

** When two sentences are thus connected, the repeated part of the second sentence is usually omitted.
