V-(으)ㄹ까요?

DEFINITION

V–(으)ㄹ까요?’ is aSentence Endings especiallyattached after verbs and used when the speaker wants tosuggest politely doing something together with the listener.  It is also designed to ask listener’s opinion about something or his or her preference before making an action or decision.

CONJUGATION

If the verb’s stem ends with a vowel + -ㄹ 까요

가다 → 갈까요

오다 → 올까요

쓰다 → 쓸까요

마시다 → 마실까요

If the verb’s stem ends with a consonant + 까요

먹다 → 먹을까요

읽다 → 읽을까요

듣다 → 들을까요[‘ㄷ’ irregular]

낫다 → 나을까요[‘ㅅ’ irregular]

줍다 → 주울까요 [‘ㅂ’ irregular]

만들다 → 만들까요 [‘ㄹ’ irregular]

THE USAGE OF THE SUBJECT

In Korea, when the conversation takes place between two persons, the first and second person, they often omit the subject. Thus ‘우리(we)’ usually is omitted in this pattern as well.

** As an answer to this sentence ending, ‘V-요 or V-어요 ‘ can be used since this sentence ending is the ending of a question. In this case, ,‘V-아요 or V-어요 ‘ changes the meaning as ‘Let’s ~’

DEFINITION

This is the most commonly used particle describing places where an action takes place.   Compare to ‘에’that is the particle for expressing a destination,it ends with ‘가다’‘오다’, but ‘에서’ ends with verbs describing actions such as ‘먹다’,‘만나다’,‘보다’.

DEFINITION

A/V-았어요/었어요’ is polite form of Sentence Closing added after verbs or adjectives, but it is informal and casual used most in daily life. Compared to formal Sentence Closing ‘았습니다/었습니다’, ‘요’closing is softer, friendlier and less formal than that and is hence mainly used in places where formality is not required. Also it indicates verbs and adjectivesPast Tense.

CONJUGATION

If the adjective and verb’s last vowel ends with ‘’, ‘’ + 았어요

가다 → 갔어요

보다 → 봤어요 

싸다 → 쌌어요

오다 → 왔어요

좋다 → 좋았어요

만나다 → 만났어요

모르다 → 몰라요 [‘르’irregular]

If the verb or adjective’s last vowel ends with all other except ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ → 어요 (such as ‘ㅓ, ㅜ,ㅡ,ㅣ)

쓰다 → 썼어요

읽다 → 읽었어요

먹다 → 먹었어요 

배우다 → 배우었어요

마시다 → 마셨어요

시끄럽다 → 시끄러웠어요 [‘ㅂ’irregular]

재미있다 → 재미있었어요

If the verb or adjective ends with ‘하다’ → 했어

하다 → 했어요

공부하다 → 공부했어요

운동하다 → 숙제했어요

수영하다 → 수영했어요

복잡하다 → 복잡했어요

어제 커피를 마셨어요. I drank a cup of coffee yesterday.

어제 한국어를 공부했어요. I studied  Korean yesterday.

작년에 친구하고 한국에 갔어요.I went to Korea with a friend last year.

어제 옆집에서 파티를 해서 너무 시끄러웠어요. It was too noisy yesterday because my neighbor had a party.

A : 어제 영화가 재미있었어요? Was the movie interesting yesterday?

B : 네, 재미있었어요. Yes, it was.
