AV지요

DEFINITION

‘A/V-지요?’ is one of Sentence Endings added after verbs or adjectives expressing the speakers strong conviction about a certain fact or a state of affairs or the fact or state of affairs referred to is something already known to both the speaker and listener or when begging a consent that the speaker think or feel . Since this is a question ending, when answering, the ‘A/V-아요/어요’ pattern is used.

CONJUGATION

In case of N-이다                                                                                                                                             

Present Tense

If the noun ends with a vowel + 지요?

회사지요?

카메라지요?

If the noun ends with a consonant + 이지요?

백화점이지요?

가방이지요?

Past Tense

If the noun ends with a vowel + 였지요?  

회사였지요?

카메라였지요?

If the noun ends with a consonant + 이었지요?

백화점이었지요?

가방이었지요?

In case of Verbs or adjectives     

 Present Tense

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with 지요?

가다 → 가지요? (가죠) **

싸다 → 싸지요?(싸죠)

먹다 → 먹지요? (먹죠)

읽다 → 읽지요? (읽죠)

마시다 → 마시지요? (마시죠)

복잡하다 → 복잡하지요? (복잡하죠)

재미있다 → 재미있지요? (재미있죠)

** it often shorten to from지요in colloquial conversation.  

 Past Tense

 If the adjective and verb ends with , + 았지요?

좋다 → 좋았지요?

보다 → 봤지요?

모르다 → 몰랐지요?[‘르’irregular]

If the adjective and verb ends with + 었지요?

쓰다 → 썼지요?

마시다 → 마셨지요?

시끄럽다 → 시끄러웠지요? [‘ㅂ’irregular]

If the adjective and verb ends with ‘하다’ → 했지요?

공부하다 → 공부했지요?

수영하다 → 수영했지요?

숙제하다 → 숙제하지요?

A : 다니엘씨는 의사지요?  Daniel is a doctor.Isn’t he?

B : 네, 의사예요.  Yes, he is.

A : 오늘이 목요일이지요?   Today is Thursday. Isn’t it?

B: 네, 목요일이에요.  Yes, it is Thursday.

A : 요즘 꽃이 비싸지요?   Flowers are expressive these days. Aren’t they?

B : 네, 비싸요.  Yes, they are.

A : 커피를 좋아하지요?   You like coffee, don’t you?

B : 네, 좋아해요.  Yes, I do.

A : 어제 날씨가 좀 추웠지요?   It was cold yesterday, wasn’t it?

B : 네, 좀 추웠어요.Yes, it was.

V아어 주세요

DEFINITION

It is aSentence Ending usedadded after verbs when expressing polite request for help or assistance. Especially /아 주세요’ has a meaning that the requested action is beneficial to the speaker or the receiver of the act where as V-()세요’ doesn’tmatter who is beneficiary.

CONJUGATION

If the verb stems last vowel ends with ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’  아 주세요 

사다 → 사 주세요

가다 → 가 주세요

오다 →  와 주세요

보다 → 봐 주세요

만나다 → 만나 주세요

If the verb stems last vowel ends with all other except ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’  주세요 (such as ‘ㅓ, ,,

먹다 → 먹어 주세요

쓰다 → 써 주세요

배우다 → 배워 주세요

마시다 → 마셔 주세요

가르치다 → 가르쳐 주세요

If the verbs ends with ‘하다’  주세요 

하다 → 해 주세요

일하다 → 일해 주세요

좋아하다 → 좋아해 주세요

공부하다 → 공부해 주세요

운동하다 → 운동해 주세요

V아어 주세요

** SometimesV-/어 주세요’ is simply used to be more polite than V-()세요since which is polite due to ’ closing, though it sounds a little pushing.

EXAMPLES

빨리 와 주세요.  Please come quickly.

오늘 저녁에 전화해 주세요.  Please give me a call.

마이클 씨 좀 바꿔 주세요.  Can I speak to Michael, please?

V고있다

DEFINITION

It is one of Sentence Endings added after verbs showing the action in progress with verbs that describe an action, it is considered Present Continuous Tense.

CONJUGATION

NORMAR EXPRESSION

Present Continuous 

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with 고 있어요

오다→ 오고 있어요

먹다→ 먹고 있어요

읽다 → 읽고 있어요

닦다 → 닦고 있어요

마시다 → 마시고 있어요

Past Continuous 

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with +있었어요

오다→ 오고 있었어요

먹다→ 먹고 있었어요

읽다 → 읽고 있었어요

닦다 → 닦고 있었어요

마시다 → 마시고 있었어요

HORNORIFIC EXPRESSION 

Present Continuous 

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with 고 계세요

오다→ 오고 계세요

먹다→ 먹고 계세요

읽다 → 읽고 계세요

닦다 → 닦고 계세요

마시다 → 마시고 계세요

Past Continuous 

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with 고 계셨어요

오다→ 오고 계셨어요

먹다→ 먹고 계셨어요

읽다 → 읽고 계셨어요

닦다 → 닦고 계셨어요

마시다 → 마시고 계셨어요

친구가 지금 집에 오고 있어요.     My friend is coming home now.

저는 지금 음식을 만들고 있어요.  I am cooking now.

어제 전화가 왔을 때 텔레비전을 보고 있었어요.  I got a call from a friend While I was watching TV yesterday.

어제 비가 내릴 때 길을 걷고 있었어요.   I was walking on the street when it rained yesterday.

어머니가 소파에서 책을 읽고 계세요.   Mother is reading a book on the sofa.

아버지가 컴퓨터를 하고 계세요.   Father is working on a computer.

애니는 지금 커피를 안 마시고 있어요.   Annie is not drinking a cup of coffee now.

저는 지금 한국어 공부를 안 하고 있어요.   I am not studying Korean now
