못V

DEFINITION

It is an adverb attached before a verb and means that one doesn’t have the ability to do something or something is simply not possible. ‘못 V’ and ‘안’ V are similar to making a negative sentence but different meaning. ‘안’ express not doing something regardless of ability or external condition whereas ‘못’ used when one is unable or it is impossible to do something.

AV아서어서

DEFINITION

It is Conjunctive Ending (connecting two clauses). It expresses‘because,since,so, so that’ in English used to connect two clauses. The first clause contains ’cause’or ‘reason’ for following clause which shows ‘effect’ or ‘result’ caused from the first clause.

CONJUGATION

In case of N-이다

If the noun ends with a vowel + 라서 : 친구 → 친구라서

If the noun ends with a consonant + 이라서 : 선생님 → 선생님이라서

In case of N-verbs or adjectives

If the verb or adjective stem’s last vowel ends with ‘ㅗ’, ‘ㅏ’ + 아서 :  

사다  사서

보다  봐서

좋다 → 좋아서

많다 → 많아서

만나다  만나서

If the verb or adjective stem’s last vowel ends with in all other vowels except above + 어서 : 

쓰다 → 써서

배우다 → 배워서

마시다 → 마셔서

맛있다 → 맛있어서

재미있다 → 재미있어서

If the verb or adjective ends with ‘하다’, ‘하다” → 해서 :

하다  해서

좋아하다  좋아해서

운동하다  운동해서

따뜻하다  따뜻해서

복잡하다  복잡해서

AV아서어서

** This Conjunctive Ending,reason or cause clause, takes only the basic form that means no time tense but it is expressed only in the end of sentence,result clause. 

EXAMPLES 

시험이 있어서 공부해야 돼요. → I should study since I have a test.

길이 복잡해서 지하철을 타요. → I take the subway because the traffic is heavy.

A : 왜 안 샀어요?         →  Why didn’t you buy?

B : 비싸서 안 샀어요.  →  I didn’t because it was expensive.

ㅂIREGULAR

DEFINITION

There are several groups of verbs and adjectives in Korean that do not follow the conjugation in a way that each ending has but they have their own way to conjugate. ㅂ’ irregular conjugation occurs inadjectives and verbs which have ‘ㅂ’ batchim such as ‘맵다’, ‘춥다’. When they need toconjugate, starting with avowel sound such as 아요/어요’,the batchim ‘’ changes into ‘’. However, for conjugations starting with a consonant sound, they don’t have irregularity.

‘ㅂ’ IRREGUALR CONJUGATION

N(이)나

DEFINITION

This is a connector used when suggesting or choosing two alternative nouns. It is equivalent with ’or’ in English. ‘(이)나’ is added to the first outof the two choices to connect the two nouns.
