DEFINITION

The Possessive Particle ‘의’ expresses the possessive relationship of the first noun being the possessor of the second noun. It corresponds to the possessive ‘of’ or ‘(noun)’s’ in English. When ‘의’ is used in the possessive sense, it can be pronounced as either ‘의’ or ‘에’ although ‘에’ is used most often. Also, the particle ‘의’ is often omitted in colloquial speech.

*** Commonly used possessive pronouns is shortened mostly as below;

나의 → 내 (my)

저의 → 제 (my, polite, showing humbleness)

너의 → 네 (yours)

EXAMPLLES

이 사람은 애니 씨의 여동생이에요. This is Annie’s younger sister.

어제 친구(의) 집에 갔어요.  I went to my friend’s house yesterday.

DEFINITION

It is Honorific expression with Informal Sentence Closing ’요’which shows respect towards the subject and is equivalent to the present tense sentence ending ‘-어요/아요/해요’ in its meaning. Honorific expression is only used for honoring or respecting someone else, hence It is never used, described or expressed by the speaker him or herself.

CONJUGATION

In case of N-이다

If the noun ends with a vowel + 세요 : 아버지 아버지세요

If the noun ends with a consonant + 이세요 : 선생님 선생님이세요

In case of Verbs or adjectives                                                                                                                  

If the verb and adjective stem word ends with a vowel + –세요 :

하다 → 하세요

오다→오세요

만나다 → 만나세요

예쁘다 → 예쁘세요

If the verb and adjective stem word ends with a consonant + –으세요 :

앉다 → 앉으세요 (안즈세요)

많다 → 많으세요 (마느세요)

읽다 → 읽으세요 (일그세요)

있다 → 있으세요 (이쓰세요)

EXAMPLES

이분은 우리 아버지세요. This is my father.

아버지는 지금 텔레비전을 보세요. My father is watching TV now.

어머니는 책을 읽으세요. My mother is reading a book.

선생님의 옷이 예쁘세요. The teacher’s clothes are pretty.

A : 저분이 김 선생님이세요? Is that Mr./Ms. Kim?

B : 아니요, 박 선생님이세요. No, that is Mr./Ms. Park.

DEFINITION

If the noun ends with a consonant + 이셨어요 : 선생님 선생님이셨어요.

만나다 → 만나셨어요

오다 → 오셨어요

예쁘다 → 예쁘셨어요[‘ㅡ’irregular]

If the verb and adjective stem word ends with a consonant + 으셨어요 :
