AV았었으면좋겠다

DEFINITION

It is a Sentence Ending added after an adjective or a verb to express a desire of what the speaker hopes or wishes to come true. However, the speaker well knows that the wish will be difficult or impossible to be realized at the moment of speaking. As you can see it use ‘-았/었’ which looks past tense but it doesn’t relate to past tense. By using past tense here, it enforces or empathizes the infeasibility of wishes.

CONJUGATION

If the verb or adjective stem’s last vowel ends with ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ + – 았으면 좋겠다: 

살다 → 살았으면 좋겠다

낫다 → 나았으면 좋겠다 [‘ㅅ’irregular]

돕다 → 도왔으면 좋겠다

좁다 → 좁았으면 좋겠다

밝다 → 밝았으면 좋겠다

동그랗다 → 동그랬으면 좋겠다 [‘ㅎ’ irregular]

In all other cases(‘ㅓ’,’ㅜ’,’ㅡ’,’ㅣ’), add -었으면 좋겠다 : 

사귀다 → 사귀었으면 좋겠다

넘다 → 넘었으면 좋겠다

끄다 → 껐으면 좋겠다

두껍다 → 두꺼웠으면 좋겠다  [‘ㅂ’irregular]

다르다 → 달랐으면 좋겠다 [‘ㅡ’ irregular]

멋지다 → 멋졌으면 좋겠다

If the verb or adjective stem’s last vowel ends with ‘하다’, ‘하다 →  : 했으면 좋겠다

출근하다 → 출근했으면 좋겠다

구경하다 → 구경했으면 좋겠다

활발하다 → 활발했으면 좋겠다

꼼꼼하다 → 꼼꼼했으면 좋겠다

돈을 많이 벌었으면 좋겠어요. I wish I could earn a lot money.

새집을 샀으면 좋겠어요. I wish I could buy a new house.

A : 얼굴이 안 좋아 보여요. You don’t look well today.

B : 일이 많아서 그래요. 좀 쉬었으면 좋겠어요. I wish I could rest for a while.

얼마나AV데요

DEFINTION

It is a Sentence Ending added after an adjective or a verb to emphasize the intensity of an action or that of a status. Generally, verbs are often used with adverbs that show the intensity, such as ‘잘’ or 많이’.

CONJUGATION

PAST TENSE

In Cases of Adjectives

If the adjective ends with a vowel + -ㄴ 데(요)

크다 → 얼마나 큰데(요)

세다 → 얼마나 센데(요)

슬프다 → 얼마나 슬픈데(요) [‘ㅡ’ irregular]

흐리다 → 얼마나 흐린데(요)

대단하다 → 얼마나 대단한데(요)

If the adjective ends with a consonant + -은데(요)  

달다 → 얼마나 단데(요) [‘ㄹ’ irregular]

높다 → 얼마나 높은데(요)

얇다 → 얼마나 얇은데(요)

빨갛다 → 얼마나 빨간데(요) [‘ㅎ’ irregular]

귀엽다 → 얼마나 귀여운데(요) [‘ㅂ’ irregular]

In Cases of Verbs

remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with -는데(요)

모으다 → 얼마나 모으는데(요)

떨어지다 → 얼마나 떨어지는데(요)

팔다 → 얼마나 파는데(요) [‘ㄹ’ irregular]

듣다 → 얼마나 듣는데(요) [‘ㄷ’ irregular]

눕다 → 얼마나 눕는데(요) [‘ㅂ’ irregular]

짓다 → 얼마나 짓는데(요) [‘ㅅ’ irregular]

PAST TENSE

If Verbs & Adjs ends with ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’+ -았는데(요)

살다 → 얼마나 살았는데(요)

낫다 → 얼마나 나았는데(요) [‘ㅅ’irregular]

돕다 → 얼마나 도왔는데(요)

좁다 → 얼마나 좁았는데(요)

밝다 → 얼마나 밝았는데(요)

동그랗다 → 얼마나 동그랬는데(요) [‘ㅎ’ irregular]

In all other cases(‘ㅓ’,’ㅜ’,’ㅡ’,’ㅣ’), add -었는데(요)

지하철을 타고 가. 이 시간에 길이 얼마나 복잡한데. Take the subway. it’s really crowded at this time.

A : 마이클 씨는 스키 잘 타요? Can Micahel ski well?

B : 그럼요. 얼마나 잘 타는데요. Yes, he’s a really good skier.

A : 냉면을 또 먹어? Are you eating naengmyun again?

B : 응, 얼마나 맛있는데. Yes, it’s really tasty.

DEFINITION

It is a Sentence Ending added after an adjective or a verb used when asking to confirm something that is heard and known from someone else.

Add ‘-면서(요)?’ after basic form

AV다면

DEFINITION

It is a Conjunctive Ending added after an adjective or a verb used to expresses hypothesis as in the first clause with ‘만약(에)’ and 만일(에)’ and the second clause expresses the ‘outcome’ of the first clause. It often describes a assumption which has a lower chance than ‘(으)면’ to realize and the speaker well knows its low possibility to come true like ‘I would do if I did~’ in English expression.

대단하다 → 대단하다면

In Cases of Nouns 

If the noun ends with a vowel + -라면 : 

학교 → 학교라면

시계 → 시계라면

If the noun ends with a consonant + -이라면 : 

학생 → 학생이라면

장갑 → 장갑이라면

 

AV다면

EXAMPLES

길에서 넘어진다면 창피할 거예요.  I would get embarrassed if I got tripped over the road.

만약에 일등을 한다면 정말 기쁠 거예요. If I won the first prize, I would be really happy.

A : 돈이 많이 있다면 뭘 하고 싶어요? What would you do if you had a lot of money?

B : 돈이 많이 있다면 세계 여행을 할 거예요. I would go on a world tour if I had a lot of money.

V(으)ㄹ래(요)

DEFINITION

It is a  Sentence Ending added after a verb to express the speaker’s arbitrary intention or to ask listener’s intention. However, it is not used in the third person(she, he, it or they).

CONJUGATION

If the verb stem ends with a vowel + -ㄹ 래(요): 

내다 → 낼래요

나가다 → 나갈래요

모으다 → 모을래요

떨어지다 → 떨어질래요

물어보다 → 물어볼래요

사과하다 → 사과할래요

If the verb stem ends with a consonant + -을래(요) : 

갚다 → 갚을래요

놓다 → 놓을래요

팔다 → 팔래요 [‘ㄹ’ irregular]

듣다 → 들을래요 [‘ㄷ’ irregular]

눕다 → 누울래요 [‘ㅂ’ irregular]

짓다 → 지을래요 [‘ㅅ’ irregular]
