DEFINITION

This is one of the Sentence Closingsused to express an action at the moment of speaking, a fact or a habit objectively and state sentences for explanation, newspaper article, diary and so on, which happen now. It can be said to be the written or formal form of Banmal,Low closing.

CONJUGATION

In Case of Adjectives

The same as Basic form

많다 → 많다

맵다 → 맵다

바쁘다 → 바쁘다

힘들다 → 힘들다

깨끗하다 → 깨끗하다

쌀쌀하다 → 쌀쌀하다

In Case of Verbs

If verb stem ends with a vowel + -ㄴ다 : 

가다 → 간다

오다 → 온다

주다 → 준다

기다리다 → 기다린다

If verb stem ends with a consonant + -는다 : 

먹다 → 먹는다

읽다 → 읽는다

앉다 → 앉는다

찍다 → 찍는다

In Case of ‘이다

If noun ends with a vowel + -다 : 

학교 → 학교다

시계 → 시계다

김치 → 김치다

If noun ends with a consonant + -이다 : 

학생 → 학생이다

장갑 → 장갑이다

집 → 집이다

오늘은 날씨가 따뜻하다. It’s warm today.

김치가 맵다. Kimchi is spicy.

학생들은 도서권에서 책을 읽는다. Students read books in the library.

많은 사람들이 동물원에서 사진을 찍는다. Many people take photos at a zoo.

여기가 바로 애니가 다니는 학교다. It’s the school to which Annie goes.

애니는 이 학교에서 공부하는 학생이다. Annie is a student who studies in this school.

CONJUGATION

In Case of Adjectives & Verbs

If verb or adjective ends with ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ + -았다 : 

사다 → 샀다

보다 → 봤다

싸다 → 쌌다

많다 → 많았다

바쁘다 → 바빴다 [ㅡ irregular]

In all other cases(‘ㅓ’,’ㅜ’,’ㅡ’,’ㅣ’), add ‘-었다 ’ : 

먹다 → 먹었다

맵다 → 매웠다 [ㅂirregular]

마시다 → 마셨다

배우다 → 배웠다

힘들다 → 힘들었다

If verb or adjective ends with ‘하다’, ‘하다’ → 했다 

일하다 → 일했다

공부하다 → 공부했다

운동하다 → 운동했다

 

깨끗하다 → 깨끗했다

쌀쌀하다 → 쌀쌀했다

In Case of ‘이다

If noun ends with a vowel + – 였다 : 

학교 → 학교였다

시계 → 시계였다

김치 → 김치였다

If noun ends with a consonant + -이었다 : 

학생 → 학생이었다

장갑 → 장갑이었다

집 → 집이었다

나는 어제 애니의 남자 친구를 미술관에서 우연히 만났다. I met Annie’s boyfriend at an art gallery by chance.

작년에 한국에서 한국 친구에게 한국말을 좀 배웠다. I learned some Korean from Korean friend in Korea last year.

어젯밤에 비가 많이 와서 오늘은 날씨가 좀 쌀쌀했다. It was chilly this morning because of raining yesterday night.

여기가 바로 애니가 다니던 학교였다. It was the school to which Annie went.

애니는 이 학교에서 공부하던 학생이었다. Annie was a student who studied in this school.

AV(으)ㄹ것이다

DEFINITION

This is one of the Sentence Endings used to express an action about the future, a fact or a habit objectively and state sentences for explanation, newspaper article, diary and so on, which will happen in the future. This can be said to be the written or formal form of Banmal,Low closing.

CONJUGATION

If the verb or adjective stem ends with a vowel + -ㄹ 것이다 : 

가다 → 갈 것이다

오다 →올 것이다

주다 →줄 것이다

달다 → 달 것이다 [ㄹirregular]

예쁘다 → 예쁠 것이다

무섭다 → 무서울 것이다[ㅂirregular]

조용하다 → 조용할 것이다

If the verb or adjective stem ends with a consonant + 을 것이다 : 

먹다 → 먹을 것이다

읽다 → 읽을 것이다

앉다 → 앉을 것이다

많다 → 많을 것이다

작다 → 작을 것이다

있다 → 있을 것이다

괜찮다 → 괜찮을 것이다

EXAMPLES

내일 친구가 미국에서 올 것이다. My friend will come from US tomorrow.

봄이 오면 산에 자주 갈 것이다. I will go to mountain often when spring comes.

지금은 집에 아무도 없어서 조용할 것이다. It will be quiet at home because there is no one there.

영화가 아주 재미있어서 극장에 사람이 많을 것이다. Since the movie is quite interesting, there will be a lot of people in the cinema.

DEFINITION

This is one of the Sentence Closings used to express speakers’ will, intention or conjecture objectively and state sentences for explanation, newspaper article, diary and so on. This can be said to be the written or formal form of Banmal,Low closing.

CONJUGATION

Present Tense

Remove suffix ‘다’ and combine with ‘겠다’ 

가다 → 가겠다

읽다 → 읽겠다

춥다 → 춥겠다

마시다 → 마시겠다

예쁘다 → 예쁘겠다

많다 → 많겠다

Past Tense

‘If last vowel with ‘’, ‘’ + 았겠다

싸다 → 쌌겠다

좋다 → 좋았겠다

만나다 → 만났겠다

If last vowel with ‘’, ‘’, ‘’, ‘ + 었겠다 :

쓰다 → 썼겠다

배우다 → 배웠겠다

마시다 → 마셨겠다

If with ‘하다’ → 했겠다

공부하다 → 공부했겠다

수영하다 → 수영했겠다

복잡하다 → 복잡했겠다

DEFINITION

It is a Conjunctive Ending connecting two clauses in which it indicates that the second action (clause) is the consequence resulting from the first action (clause) and the 2nd action take place together with the 1stone. Normally, the first clause expresses how do or did to execute the second clause. Naturally the two actions are so closely related that the second action will not happen without the first action occurred.

CONJUGATION

If verb or adjectiveends with ‘ㅏ’ or ‘ㅗ’ + -아서 : 

만나다 → 만나서

보다 → 봐서

사다 →사서

타다 →타서

In all other cases(‘ㅓ’,’ㅜ’,’ㅡ’,’ㅣ’), add ‘-어서 ’ : 

읽다 → 읽어서

마시다 → 마셔서

꾸다 →꿔서

그리다 → 그려서

If verb or adjective ends with ‘하다’→ 해서 

하다 → 해서

공부하다 → 공부해서

반하다 →반해서

분실하다 → 분실해서

V아서어서

**The tenses such as past, present, future, in the sentence involving ‘아서/어서, are only expressed in the second clause(action) not the first.

EXAMPLES 

어제 백화점에서 친구를 만나서 같이 영화관에 갔어요. I met a friend in the department store and went to the cinema with him.

꽃을 사서 여자 친구에게 줬어요. I bought flowers and gave them to my girlfriend.

A : 어제 저녁에 뭐 먹었어요? What did you have for dinner last night?

B : 불고기를 만들어서 먹었어요. I made some bulgogi and ate it.

N와과N

DEFINITION

It is one of the particles to connect nouns like ‘하고’ in Korean and ‘and’ in English. Mostly used in a formal and or an objective text instead of ‘하고’.

N와과

EXAMPLES

애니와 마이클 은 항상 같이 학교에 가요. Annie and Michael always go to school together.

아침에 빵과 우유 를 먹었어요. I ate some bread and drink a cup of milk in the morning.

AV지않다

DEFINITION

It is one of the Sentence Endings to express negation (negative sentence) added after stem of the verb and adjective. It is the same negation form as ‘안 -A/V’.

CONJUGATION

가다 → 가지 않다

오다 → 오지 않다

먹다 → 먹지 않다

읽다 → 읽지 않다

맵다 → 맵지 않다

있다 → 있지 않다

예쁘다 → 예쁘지 않다

마시다 → 마시지 않다

일요일에는 공부를 하지 않아요. I don’t study on Sunday.

저녁에는 길에 차가 많지 않습니다. There aren’t many cars on the road at night.
